Our Sunday hike was a fantastic, almost 6 mile round trip jaunt that took us from the campground, up the steep and challenging Raven Rocks trail...
to this lush and scenic vista atop Raven Rock...
to Buck Knob, the highest elevation in the forest (3855 feet!) where we sat on this fallen tree to eat our lunch (and then climb a little)...
along the top of the ridge via the Rich Mountain Fire Trail, where we encountered this crazy snapped-in-half tree that looked like it could come crashing down at any moment...
and finally down the mountain via the slightly gentler sloping Meat Box Run Trail.
June 5 is National Trails Day, a project of the American Hiking Society. You can print out this PDF (if you are hiking in WV) to log your miles and participate. The theme this year is Find Your Happy Place. I know my happy place is anywhere in the hills of West Virginia, surrounded by trees, rocks, water and wildlife. We will most likely spend it at Cooper's Rock. Where will you be? I hope you can get out and enjoy a trail, there is probably one near you! And a study shows that walking out in nature can make you happier, so get out there!
