When we go hike the Hemlock Trail in spring, we bring an extra pair of shoes. You can clamber down to the water and wade through it in many places.
In the summer, sometimes you can find a pool three or four feet deep, and swim a little.
As far as I know, that little waterway is safe. No acid mine drainage, no sewage runoff from housing developments upstream... People fish in it.
I evidently spend a lot of time taking pictures of the reflections of trees in it.
